    Product Description

They were three generations of magnificent  red-haired beauties born to scandal, bred to success,  bound to a single extraordinary man--Julien Mistral,  the painter, the genius, the lover whose passions  had seared them all. Maggy--Flamboyant mistress of  Mistral's youth, the toast of Paris in the '20s.  Her luminous flesh was immortalized in the  paintings that made Mistral legendary. Teddy--Maggy's  daughter, the incomparable cover girl who lived fast  and left as her legacy Mistral's dazzling love  child. Fauve--Mistral's daughter, the headstrong,  fearless glory girl whose one dark secret drove her  to rule the world of high fashion and to risk  everything in a feverish search for love. From the  '20s Paris of Chanel, Colette, Picasso and Matisse to  New York's sizzling new modeling agencies of the  '50s, to the model ward of the '70s,  Mistral's Daughter captures the explosive  glamour of life at the top of the worlds of art and  high fashion. Judith Krantz has given us a  glittering international tale as spellbinding as her  other celebrated best-sellers,  Scruples, Princess Daisy, I'll Take  Manhattan, Till We Meet Again,  Scruple s Two,  Dazzle, and Lovers.

3.0 out of 5 stars AN ALMOST MISS, December 13, 2004
This review is from: Mistral's Daughter (Paperback)
OK, let me start this review by saying that I adore big family-oriented sagas with many sins and oh-so many secrets. I'm always the first in line when any book resembling what is already mentioned comes out. So imagine my joy when picking up (twenty years late, mind you) Mistral's Daughter by the lady of all lady writers, Judith Krantz. _The_ Judith Krantz who made Princess Daisy such a fun and addictive read. Not to mention the classic of all classics, Scruples. Two great books which deserved all of their mega-successes.

Well, dear readers, I guess the saying three's a crowd is true, for Krantz's third novel may have been another smash to many eyes, but not so much to yours truly. Don't get me wrong, all the melodrama is in there : the innocent yet bold heroine, the manipulative and abusive foe, the temperamental but loving hero, steamy steamy love scenes galore... well, you get my drift.

Despite those pluses, somehow Krantz failed to capture the essence of... Read more

This review is from: Mistral's Daughter (Paperback)
Julien Mistral is a painter with great passion for his work. He also has passion for three generations of Lunel women, two of whom are his mistresses and one who is his daughter. With Mistral, nothing can come between him and his work and this obsession, coupled with fateful occurences in the lives of the Lunels is the foundation on which this book is written. Krantz has a way of creating characters which the reader cares about and putting them into situations where their flawed human nature causes many complications in their lives. This book takes the reader behind the scenes of the art and fashion worlds of France and New York, and tells an engrossing and interesting tale. It's a good read!

        Mistral's Daughter [VHS]

        Amazon.com

Mistral's Daughter, based on the book by pulp queen Judith Krantz, hails from the golden era of nighttime soapy miniseries, the mid-'80s--when fans of drama, romance, scandal, and forbidden passion had a front-row seat during prime time. And what a prime Mistral's Daughter is! The miniseries stars TV powerhouses Stephanie Powers, Lee Remick, Stacy Keach, Robert Urich, and Joanna Lumley in a narrative that spans four decades of louche and luxe France and its art and fashion worlds. Keach plays the tormented--and tormenting--genius painter Mistral (based, Krantz says in an introduction to this three-disc set, on both Picasso and van Gogh), whose obsessions and appetites shape his brilliant art--and bewitch and bedevil the many women in his life. The plot revolves around Mistral's legitimate daughter and a love child, who carry on the flame of their overwrought papa as they try to both live up to, and live down, the Mistral heritage. But the plot, as with most Krantz novels, is really not the point. It's love, forbidden and otherwise; scandal in heaping amounts; fame, fortune--and leaping from one to the next (as well as from one bed to the next). The whole thing is fabulous, soapy fun, and deeply engaging, hour after hour. The boxed set also includes a contemporary interview with Stacy Keach and what he liked best about his character and the filming of Mistral's Daughter--as well as what he loved about the fading art form of the miniseries, and why it's so much fun as an actor--and as a viewer. --A.T. 5.0 out of 5 stars Hopeless Romantic, February 2, 2003
          By A Customer
This review is from: Mistral's Daughter [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Mistrals Daughter is excellent, expecially if you are a hopeless romantic like me. Stephanie Powers is very believeable as the 18ish country girl who arrives in Paris hoping to find love and success as an artist's model. A reality check occurs when the object of her affection, Mistral, played by Stacy Keach turns out to be more interested in himself and his own pursuits as an artist, than his realtionship with "Maggie Lunel"(Powers). Broken hearted, Maggie is pursued and falls for the enigmatic wealthy American from New York played by dashing (and young)Timothy Dalton. Tragedy folows "Maggie" all of her days and the story follows three generations of Lunel women. Their romances intertwine with Mistral and his illegitimate daughter. Worth watching on the couch witha hot cup of tea and an afghan. Enjoy!

This review is from: Mistral's Daughter (DVD)
It's been over twenty years since this miniseries first aired but who can forget Stacy Keach's performance as the artist Julian Mistral or the part played by the late Lee Remick as a conniving and scheming woman who stopped at nothing to trap and keep Mistral in a lovless marriage. This epic love story spans several generations and reveals the level of despair and sheer decadance some of the characters fell into during this span and how their lives remained forever interwoven. You can almost feel Mistral's pain in his last days as it is revealed how his paintings came to reflect his anguish and guilt for having refused shelter during WWII to acquaintances of the Jewish Faith and how that refusal ultimately led to their deaths at the hands of the Nazis. With his death and through his will, he finally gets revenge for the years of dispair he endured during his loveless marriage and the tragic loss of the only woman he truly ever loved. The miniseries was filmed almost entirely in... Read more
